MAPPADEMICS: Using a Computer Simulation to Model Pandemics
A project that was submitted to the Kuala Lumpur Engineering Science Fair and which received a
Special Award from Krya.
Project Details / Background
My team and I were largely inspired by:
and
Pandemic Simulation by Coding CassowaryOur idea was to make a more visually appealing
method of visualising a pandemic or epidemic, while also making it more tailored to the Malaysian
community.
The Slide Deck
During our presentation, we attracted the attention of
many members of the public, including university students, lecturers and even one of the exhibitors.
Out of ~400 teams that were there, we were one of the five awarded with a Special Award from Krya,
and given a scholarship to present at an International Conference! The presentation includes a visual paper
along with our slide deck.
The Paper
This 3-day long experience taught me so much more than
how to put together a science project. It's taught me resilience, determination, quick thinking,
communication and a plethora of other skills. Even though it started with an idea that didn't quite work out,
I most certainly am thankful for the chance to have pushed myself by
having to think and work under a very tight time constraint (~a week). A huge
thank you to my teammates and friends James and Amni who stuck with me throughout this project.
I am ever so thankful for an opportunity like this: to have a platform on which to share
my ideas and, in turn, learn so much from other people and to
engage with some of the best young scientists this part of the world has to offer.
